Director, Oncology Strategy & Analytics

Position Summary:

The primary objective is to achieve and maintain sustainable growth by maximizing value and prioritizing resources across the portfolio. Director will play a critical role in driving our success by contributing to this objective within Oncology and future therapeutic areas. He/she will be integral to balancing opportunity and risk across therapeutic areas, including building and assessing business cases, leading strategic sessions on pipeline strategy, and evaluating competitive intelligence. He/she will interface often with the Senior Management Team and is expected to communicate in a clear and data-driven manner, from written communication to live presentations. This person will be based in the Bay Area and report to the VP, Strategy & Project Management group. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate on new opportunity assessments for existing molecules, business case evaluations, and indication selection analyses for existing molecules: 
    • Frame strategic questions and approach
    • Lead market research efforts
    • Collaborate cross-functionally on scientific basis, CMC readiness, clinical development options, commercial opportunity, and financial analysis
    • Synthesize into recommendation
  • Evaluate business cases within portfolio context to prioritize opportunities 
    • Ensure company resources (people, investment, time, energy) are aligned with prioritized opportunities 
  • Work with business leaders to strengthen Oncology pipeline strategy:
    • Develop framework(s) to lead strategic discussions
    • Conduct primary research as needed and evaluate secondary research to establish fact base on market dynamics
    • Facilitate working sessions that drive towards recommendation 
  • Plan and execute market research projects and conduct deep dive analytics to support key business decisions 
  • Contribute to relevant BD efforts (e.g., due diligence efforts)
  • Engage with and support Project Directors in their efforts to drive projects’ strategic decisions, timelines, and budgets
  • Coordinate competitive intelligence collection, analysis, and dissemination to create a unified understanding of the market landscape in relevant areas of Oncology
  • Stay current on key publications (e.g., scientific literature, analyst reports, regulatory landscape changes) and share findings with key stakeholders 
  • Establish himself/herself as a strategic thought partner to Oncology project teams and stakeholders, and with Senior Management Team, for efforts such as:
    • Evaluating clinical development options, including with relevant primary and secondary research efforts
    • Preparing for advisory boards
    • Preparing for investor presentations
  • If needed, support analyses relevant to 3rd therapeutic area selection and development
  • Lead special projects 


Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Life Sciences 
  • Advanced degree in Life Sciences (or related field) required, preferably in field related to Oncology
  • MBA also considered valuable
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience:
    • Experience in biotech/pharma, with experience in oncology drug development
    • Pharmaceutical R&D drug development knowledge 
    • Familiarity with key biotech/pharma functions and processes 
    • Experience in analytically rigorous roles (e.g., consulting, banking)
  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to provide strategic insight and problem solve, quantifying options, tradeoffs, budget, and resources needed 
    • Top-tier consulting and/or investment banking background strongly preferred
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills (including cultural sensitivity) and communication skills (including presentations, written communications) 
  • Strong leadership skills, including ability to lead colleagues across line organizations outside of reporting relationships 
  • Driven by curiosity and strong interest in learning; willing to “dig into the science”; dedicated to becoming an expert on the our therapeutic areas, technology, products, competitors, and related areas 
  • High level of organizational skills and attention to detail
